This painting is inspired by the inscription on an earthenware bowl found in Greece and dating to c.200AD, which translated to Christ the Magician or Christ the Sorcerer. The spilling of milk is a pagan practice to appease and celebrate gods of the earth, and the bowl was found buried deep in the earth. Christ is the reinvigoration of the old gods in a new form, symbolised by the robin red breast, come down to drink the milk.
